Analysis and Design of Technology-Based Learning Environments

Instructor: Dr. Brenda Bannan

Fall 2017 - 3 Credits

Course Description

This course will provide students with opportunities to experience the instructional design and user experience design process as applied to the conceptual prototype of a technology-based learning system or interface design. Students may have the opportunity to interact with clients, subject matter experts, target audience members and draft a comprehensive user experience design approach as well as prototype their ideas using selected technology software tools. The course will be focused on facilitating connections between interdisciplinary approaches of user experience prototyping, design and development of teaching and learning systems/interfaces from multiple disciplines including instructional design, computer science, human computer interface and related fields.

Professional Standards

The following standards from the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (IBSTPI) were covered in this course:

  • Professional Foundations:

    • 1. Communicate effectively in visual, oral and written form

    • 4. Apply data collection and analysis skills in instructional design projects

  • Planning & Analysis:

    • 6. Conduct a needs assessment in order to recommend appropriate design solutions and strategies

    • 7. Identify and describe target population and environmental characteristics

    • 8. Select & use analysis techniques for determining instructional content

    • 9. Analyze the characteristics of existing and emerging technologies and their potential use

    • 12. Design instructional intervention

Artifacts and Reflections from Course

This course was the first part of a year-long group project that connects to EDIT 752. To see the development lifespan of this project, please start here and then look at EDIT 752. My group decided to develop an app that would assist faculty members at George Mason University to use the technology in their classrooms more easily and efficiently. This includes content for them to physically use the hardware, the ability to access IT support from their phones, locate details about their classrooms, and more.

During this semester, we worked through ideation and then through contextual inquiry and analysis. We journeyed through the development process and designed a prototype of the app. The artifacts on this page will guide you through this journey. To continue learning about our development process, visit the EDIT 752 page.
